after the abortion

You’ll rest in the recovery room after the treatment for a half an hour to an hour (or longer if you’ve had a general anaesthetic). We’ll then give you advice and information about aftercare, plus a prescription for antibiotics, and tell you what you should and shouldn’t do during the next few weeks. The doctor will check you once more and you can leave the clinic after that.

In later stages of pregnancy there’s a slight risk of complications. All our clinics work together with a hospital nearby where aftercare can be given the same day if necessary.

You may experience some stomach cramps and blood loss – like a normal period – for the first few days after the treatment. The abortion is carried out under strict medical conditions and the risk of infection is very small. But if you have a fever (higher than 38°C) as well as abdominal pain, and this lasts for more than 24 hours, you could have an infection. In that case, contact us or your doctor as soon as possible.

Sometimes the pregnancy has not been terminated with the abortion. The chance of this happening is less than 1%. If the pregnancy does continue, repeat treatment will be necessary.
