male sterilisation

Male sterilisation (vasectomy) is a simple surgical procedure done under a local anaesthetic. During the vasectomy, both the sperm tubes (vas deferens) between the testicles and the prostate are sealed. This means that you’re no longer fertile. Erections and ejaculation (seminal discharge) are not affected. But after the operation, the ejaculated fluid contains no sperm cells. These are reabsorbed by your body.

It is possible to have the operation under a general anaesthetic (sedation) if you would prefer that to a local anaesthetic. There is an extra charge for this.

The procedure takes about 30 min. You can go home immediately afterwards, unless you’re sedated and then you’ll have to stay longer. If you are to be sedated, you mustn’t eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the treatment.
